Château Eza is an enchanting hotel and restaurant tucked away in one of the most exciting sites on the Côte d'Azur in Southern France. Pretty as a postcard, the hotel clings to the side of the ancient rock walls of Eze, a thousand-year-old medieval village more than 1,300 feet above the Mediterranean Sea. Château Eza is a castle of stone on a narrow cobblestone street, too small for modern day automobiles. Upon your arrival look for the "Relais" which houses our Donkeys at the bottom of the village, our valet will park your car and show you the way; this service is fit for royalty and you will feel like a king in this castle of Medieval charm. The walk (light hike) up through this history-loaded village is the best way to discover its charm and secrets. |
Each of the ten guest rooms can be reached by walking under stone passageways, past cave-like shops and restaurants, and via ancient stone steps and walkways which lead to the individual doorways of the chambers and suites; most rooms feature private balconies with breathtaking views. Château Eza's award-winning restaurant has an indoor glass dining room and several outdoor terraces including a couple of smaller private decks. Here, atop the cliffs, you may enjoy the panoramic view on the sparkling waters of the sea by day, or the magic of sunset and a thousand twinkling lights along the spectacular French Riviera coastline each night. |
A simple breakfast or a gourmet dining experience can be yours at the "Chàteau Eza" award-winning restaurant - selected as the second most romantic restaurant in the world by Barbara Brass's "Romantic Hideaways" survey. The indoor glass dining room or outdoor terraces atop the cliff offers you a breathtaking view of the sea by day, or a magical sunset with a thousand lights along the spectacular Riviera coastline each night. Côte d'Azur belongs to all those who dream of it... It is beaches, luxury hotels and sun-drenched towns. It loves nightlife, cinema, glitter and roulette, being under in the limelight, while protecting its natural environment. It also elegantly dons the latest creations from haute couture while jogging in a white sweat suit at dawn. It revels in the maze of streets of its perched villages, hikes on mountain peaks flirting with the sky_ "canyoneers" in white water. It can be theatrical, adores opera and putting on a show_ before strolling, holding a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers, in the aisles of a colourful market. |
History of Château Eza Château Eza was built over 400 years ago within the ancient city walls of the 9th century village of Eze. In modern times, Château Eza was the residence of Prince William of Sweden from 1923-1953. As an author, he did much of his writing in this location. His father Gustav V, and his brother, Gustav Adolf, were both kings of Sweden. The present king of Sweden, Carl Gustav, is Prince William's nephew. |
The modern comforts of Chateau Eza did not come easily or inexpensively. André Rochat, the Swiss owner from 1976 until the end of 1993, did not simply put out an "open far business" sign. Before he opened his private residence to guests in 1985, he completely modernised and renovated the premises. All the construction materials had to be brought up the steep winding streets, 1300 feet above the sea, by donkeys which are still present to greet guests. The result was truly a masterpiece far all to enjoy. |
The refurbishing by "Enchanted Escapes" is being done with the intention of preserving and honouring the many centuries of history and hard work preceding uso. The next page in the history of Chateau Eza is now being written... Nowadays, Chàteau Eza belongs to the "Stein Group" managed by the General Manager, Mr Thierry Naidu. The hotel closed its doors far five months far a complete renovation (from November 2003 to the 1st of April 2004). |
